Legislation (A.7768/S.7573) would ensure schools are not in session on Lunar New Year, underscoring Governor Hochul’s commitment to supporting and protecting New York’s AAPI community. Living Amends helped out my recovery and sobriety immensely. When I moved to Austin, I had almost no money to my name. I found out about the scholarship through a friend and applied, and to my amazement, I got it. Getting this scholarship took a lot of stress and worry off of my mind and made it possible for me to get a job and get my feet underneath me. This allowed me to focus on my recovery and allowed me to flourish and find a job working in recovery as well, helping others the same way I was helped.

    • Determining the most impactful living amends will require a great deal of honesty.
    • By working through the list in Step 9 and making amends to each person named there, you will restore a piece of yourself with each conversation.
    • Although, you’ll have to find a different way to do so and in a way that makes a lasting impact on you and the people you love who are still here.

Apologizing in this way may open the door to continued healing, growth, and restored relationships in recovery. It’s much easier to just apologize and move on, but committing to living your life differently looks different. Making these types of life improvements typically requires that you work with a counselor or therapist who can provide an outsider’s perspective and objective view of your life. Making these types of life changes is difficult and requires lots of hard, emotionally-complex work, but it’s worth all the effort in the end. It’s not one we use too frequently in our everyday language, but it still holds significant meaning.

    Work on your relationships

Just like each person needs an individualized approach to alcohol addiction treatment, your approach to making amends in AA may look completely different from someone else’s. A few months back, she was traveling for an extended period of time. Well, the time came to continue my living amends to her and redo her entire master suite, including her bathroom. She came home to what she described as “a completely different house”.

There may be so many times we feel we let someone down that it can be hard to know where to begin. We want to convey our heartfelt remorse but worry that our words will fall short. That is, you can’t push it to the side or avoid it because of embarrassment. The problem is there, and that person is in front of you right now. Of all the 12 steps, Step 9 is often referred to as particularly challenging.

    Recovery Coaching

Step Nine can leave you emotionally exhausted; it’s a difficult step to navigate. But the rewards you’ll reap from living amends can help make the challenges easier and more productive. If you’re familiar with substance use recovery and 12-step programs, the idea of “living amends” might ring a bell. When you cannot directly make up for something to the person you hurt, a living amends is a decision to change your ongoing behavior in a way that is informed by the wrongdoing. Your ‘living amends’ is living in a way that that acknowledges the previous mistake by consistently living in a way that doesn’t repeat it or compensates for it.

I have also joined up with a group of musicians who get together before meetings and play music. It’s been a really great experience to do that sober, with other sober people! I hope to continue getting pet sitting opportunities as well. I know I cannot fix all of the issues that came as a direct result of my drinking but I have a short term plan to start making small financial/livings amends with help from my sponsor. I have a clear head, an open heart and a desire to live and I am so very grateful you chose to grant me this gift.

    The List Of Wrongs

The scholarship I received from Living Amends to attend Ascension House in Austin, Texas was incredibly beneficial for someone who was trying to restart their life. I personally needed to change almost everything about my life if I was going to be successful in recovery. Being given a scholarship allowed me to have the time and supportive environment I needed to make those changes. It was at Ascension House that I learned what working a strong program looked like and how working the program could change my life. The scholarship and the chance to live and learn at Ascension House is part of why I am sober today.

    • I honestly never saw myself not only sponsoring someone but also looking forward to and being excited to sponsor someone.
    • You can also turn to AA’s Big Book and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (the 12 & 12) for guidance specific to Step 8.
    • Perhaps it is something you said or did while they were ill.
    • I hope to continue getting pet sitting opportunities as well.
    • She came home to what she described as “a completely different house”.

These people are untraceable, and direct amends to them are not possible. The only amends I can make to those untraceable individuals, the only “changes for the better” I can offer, https://ecosoberhouse.com/ are indirect amends made to other people, whose paths briefly cross mine. Courtesy and kindness, regularly practiced, help me to live in emotional balance, at peace with myself.

The other person may hear the same statement as exasperation with them or a minimizing of the ways you’ve hurt them. Instead, try to reference specific times when you hurt the other person and/or let them down. Being specific also makes the amends that you offer more achievable. You may not be able to rectify “everything” you’ve done to the other person, but you can repair specific wrongs. The spiritual purpose of making amends is to find inner peace, freedom, release, and rebirth.
